Bas de Leede Facts

  1. His father, Tim de Leede, represented the Netherlands in 29 ODI matches and was a member of the Dutch squads that participated in the 1996, 2003, and 2007 editions of the ICC (International Cricket Council) Cricket World Cup. The Netherlands played its first major senior-level ICC event in the aforementioned 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup.
  2. In the Netherlands’ opening match of the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, against heavyweights India, Tim became a national hero by recording excellent bowling figures of 4/35 to limit India to a below-par total of 204 runs. Those 4 wickets included the prized scalps of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, 2 of the greatest batsmen of all time. Although India bounced back to win the match by 68 runs, Tim was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance.
  3. In July 2019, Bas had been selected to represent the Rotterdam Rhinos in the inaugural edition of the Euro T20 Slam (a professional T20 cricket league that aimed to involve 6 city-based franchise teams – 2 each from Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands). However, about a month later, the tournament was canceled.
  4. Bas, having made his international debut in June 2018, made his first appearance in a major senior-level ICC event at the 2021 edition of the ICC World T20. The tournament was a disaster for the Netherlands as the team lost all 3 of its first-round matches and was knocked out of the tournament on the first hurdle. Bas, too, had a dismal time in the tournament, scoring just 7 runs in 2 innings and conceding 15 runs in the only over (a set of 6 legal deliveries) that he balled.
  5. Both Bas and the Netherlands made tremendous improvements in the next (2022) edition of the tournament. The team won 2 of its 3 matches in the first round to qualify for the ‘Super 12’ phase where they, despite losing the first 3 of their matches, finished with a bang – first overcoming higher-ranked Zimbabwe by 5 wickets in their penultimate match and then causing the greatest upset of the tournament by eliminating semi-final favorites South Africa by 13 runs in their last act of the tournament.
  6. The Netherlands finished in 4th place in their group in the ‘Super 12’ phase of the tournament with 4 points – ahead of both Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. This meant that they finished within the ‘Top 8’ teams of the tournament – ahead of much better-ranked teams like the West Indies, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe – a feat that helped them qualify directly for the next (2024) edition of the tournament.
  7. Bas finished as the joint 2nd-highest wicket-taker of the tournament – recording 13 scalps in 7 innings, tied with England’s Sam Curran who won the ‘Player of the Series’ award as England won the ICC World T20 title for the 2nd time. Bas ended the tournament with an excellent economy rate of 7.68 runs per over, a stellar bowling average of 13 runs per wicket, and an astounding strike rate of 10.1 balls per wicket.
  8. He was the Netherlands’ best bowler in the team’s first 2 matches of the tournament – 3/19 in 3 overs against the United Arab Emirates and 2/18 in 3 overs against Namibia. He was named the ‘Player of the Match’ in both those games.
